Come Play with the Stars!

house of frankenstein wax museum

At this celebrity wax museum, you’ll have the chance to get to know stars of film, television, music and sports in a way that is unattainable anywhere else. You’ll be able to walk up and look into the eyes of life-size wax figures that began as clay sculptures and are now lifelike presences. You’ll also find props and costumes to give you the right look for your pictures with current and classic stars. Whether you’re walking the red carpet, taking a selfie at an A-list cocktail party, or singing with a pop star, this museum is full of experiences that bring you inside Hollywood. The next time you find yourself sauntering through the Biblewalk Bible Museum in Mansfield, Ohio, take a good, long look at the life-size wax figure of Jesus. The wax museum houses over 300 life-size sculptures that depict 70 biblical vignettes of the life of Jesus Christ.

Foolish mortals beware: House of Frankenstein transports guests into a world of horror, history, and wax dioramas

Because these were cast-off wax figures that didn't make the cut for celebrity wax museums like Madame Tussauds. But before constant celebrity updates and instant access to the past via the internet, wax museums taught travelers about historical events and brought them face-to-wax-face with important people. Just as taxidermy and natural history museums once exposed audiences to an exotic world they never knew existed, wax museums—with their lifelike figures and intricate dioramas—vividly display the past to those of us in the present. Wax museums are prime examples of retro roadside kitsch, the kind of place that families have been visiting on vacations for generations. But, there's something a little darker and weirder about wax museums than your average tourist attraction.

You'll see vignettes from history, including the town's 1626 founding, a look into the shipping industry, the town's mercantile trade, and, of course, scenes from the 1692 witch hysteria. You can also learn to tie nautical knots, and can experience what it was like to be imprisoned for alleged witchcraft. The lower dungeon also has a Frankenstein horror-themed exhibit as well, as if pretending to be locked in a cell for being a witch isn't creepy enough. A few haunted house-like walk-through attractions interspersed between the dioramas help keep visitors on edge. Instead of a gift shop, patrons exit through the Black Hole, a short bridge enveloped in a spinning ceiling of stars and House of Frankenstein makes sure that each person leaves filled with adrenaline—and maybe a bit of vertigo. Today’s tourists—who have grown used to digital effects and high-tech animatronics—don’t always appreciate attractions filled with dimly-lit, dusty dioramas.

Roadtrippers

After a few heart-stopping jump scares and more than a few audible screams, I finish my first journey of terror (and my second, and third). I exit House of Frankenstein onto Canada Street and as my eyes adjust to the bright sunlight, I think that the warning signs may be good marketing, but they’re also true—I am nothing but a foolish mortal. If you're brave enough to tour the wax museum, you'll take a self-guided tour through the big green monster's house. Taking in along the way, scary sights made of wax, that come to life with the push of a button.

Or maybe it's that Madame Toussad, the most famous name in wax museums, got her start making wax death masks of executed royalty during the French Revolution. House of Frankenstein may be called a “wax museum,” but it’s much more than that. It’s more interactive and thrilling than a wax museum filled with lifelike—but ultimately lifeless—figures. There are jump scares and spooky scenes, but House of Frankenstein is less terrifying than a traditional haunted house. There is something for everyone here along the history-to-horror spectrum—but at least one moment of true terror is almost guaranteed. Back in the 1970s Paster Richard Diamond was inspired after a visit to a historical wax museum.

When Vice writes an article called "An Open Letter to the Worst Wax Museum in America", you kinda have to take that into consideration when making a list of grotesque (but fun!) wax museums. But, despite all of this, its primo location on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard means that it's regularly pretty crowded. Whether or not the photos you take here make the $20 ticket worth it is up for you to decide.

The same forceful puff of air to the ankles startles me three times in less than a minute. The biggest scare comes when I lean in to get a closer look at a completely dark window, thinking the light must be broken (further proof that I’m an easy mark). I trip a motion sensor that violently flings a “body,” hands bound with rope, at the plexiglass. The resulting thud is mirrored by the thump of my own heart and only slightly less loud than my involuntary scream.

I scare easily, but I was not deterred by signs warning that House of Frankenstein is not suitable for children. I brushed off the “Foolish Mortals Beware” and “No Refunds” signs as hyperbolic marketing ploys, paid my admission, and entered the first darkened hallway with smug confidence. This wasn’t my first visit to a wax museum, so I knew what to expect—or so I thought. With it taking a half hour to walk through, everyone leaves with a favorite fright. “If you're looking for something fun to do while on Hollywood Boulevard, I really recommend this wax museum.

They are dual time capsules—living postcards that provide visitors with a glimpse into historical events as well as into the time in which they were created. There are dozens of scenes spread throughout the two-story house, and the only drawback to the dim mood-lighting is that visitors aren’t able to better examine the handcrafted details that make each diorama unique. The mechanics may be crude by today’s standards, but creaks, clicks, and sometimes painfully slow delays in the action are all an integral part of the experience. House of Frankenstein brings to life some of the most famous stories in the history of horror through dioramas and interactive displays. It features everything from classic literary tales and figures to modern-day pop culture icons like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. As long as the scene has the power to elicit a scream—or at the very least, a shiver—House of Frankenstein doesn’t discriminate.

After my initial visit, I voluntarily return to the house of horrors two more times and the thrills are not diminished upon repeat viewings. I personally love spoilers, but even if the exhibits haven’t changed since the ‘70s, one visit to House of Frankenstein is just not sufficient. Wax museums used to be a major attraction for visitors to New York state, but now only a handful remain. In this edition of Explore New York, we take you to a house of horror, made entirely of wax. Holdouts like House of Frankenstein (or the John Brown Wax Museum or the Niagara Wax Museum of History) should be valued not only because they’ve somehow managed to survive, but also for their artistry.

“You truly feel as if you’re in an old horror movie,” says Amanda Marandola, who visited Lake George and House of Frankenstein in June. Please note that Madame Tussauds reserves the right to remove and/or alter figures/experiences for technical, operational, health and safety or other reasons without prior notice. Frankenstein’s monster greets us at the door with a slow, silent wave—it is his house, after all. On the second-story, visible through a large window, a figure in a high-collared, satin cape plays a pipe organ flanked by gargoyles.

Instead, the raid was an unmitigated disaster; several of his men, including a son, died, and he was captured and hanged for his role. The John Brown Wax Museum pulls no punches when detailing the brutal life and death of John Brown... Or maybe it's the eerie wax figures that make the displays all the more bone-chilling. Another wax museum adding some scares to the experience is the Salem Wax Museum... But I mean, it's Salem, so that's to be expected with anything you'd find in the famously witchy town.

"It's going through at your own pace, and just looking at things. It is different than that, from a haunted house, but it is still scary," said Bates. Truth may be stranger than fiction, but some of House of Frankenstein’s dioramas prove that real-life events may also be much scarier than their literary counterparts. Scenes of prisoners sentenced to die by electric chair or at the gallows—where the spectator becomes an executioner at the push of a button—are terrifying in a very visceral way. Zombies, vampires, and ghosts seem downright tame in comparison to the horrors dreamed up by—and for—humans. Why bother with Cooperstown's extensive Baseball Hall of Fame when you can (kind of) see the real deal for yourself at the Heroes of Baseball Wax Museum. It's a kitschier version of the Hall of Fame, and is a lighter addition to a trip to Cooperstown.

Betty Boop History

As History reports, "the press had a field day with the concept of a performer attempting to protect her popular 'boops.'" The Fleischers were not impressed and fought back. Besides testimony from the women who had voiced Boop for the cartoons, other performers testified as well. Fleischer Studios was on the cutting edge of sound as well as animation, and their Betty cartoons featured many leading vocalists and musicians of the time, including Ethel Merman, Rudy Vallee, and Don Redman. Fleischer particularly tapped in to jazz, and Betty performed alongside jazz legends like Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong. The New York Times called her “the most menacing of the baby-talk ladies”—a reference to a vaudeville phenomenon also used by performers like Fanny Brice and Irene Franklin. Two years before Betty Boop’s debut, Kane had skyrocketed to fame with the song “That’s My Weakness Now,” which used the phrase “boop-boop-a-doop” as shorthand for sex.

Betty's Sex AppealUnlike Disney, Fleischer Studios' only real competitor at the time, Fleischer allowed several racy images and scenarios to enter his cartoons. In a couple of cartoons ("Mysterious Mose"-1930 and "The Old Man of the Mountain"-1933), Betty loses her dress completely, but is conveniently hidden behind a tree or in her bed. Very often Betty's curved silhouette could be seen through her clothing as she passed before a fire or other light.

From its home in California, Disney was laying the groundwork for the idyllic, fantastical fairy tales that would soon dominate its oeuvre. In New York, meanwhile, Fleischer created a grungy, often dangerous urban world for its characters to navigate. Betty appeared in the first "Color Classic" cartoon Poor Cinderella, her only theatrical color appearance in 1934.

Betty Boop was dreamed up by Max Fleischer, a major pioneer in the creative and technical development of animated films, and originally drawn by Grim Natwick . Fleisher's 1915 invention, the Rotoscope, introduced a technique in which animators traced over filmed action, creating life-like movement that changed cartoons forever. By the end of the Roaring Twenties, Fleischer’s invention could perfectly capture every bounce and flounce of his flapper-style sweetheart, Betty Boop.

By the summer of 1933, Betty Boop was ready to use her star power to introduce fresh talent. Before our favorite spinach-eating sailor had his own series, Popeye performed a choreographed hula dance alongside a scantily-clad Betty. Popeye the Sailor’s catchy theme song (and his good company) made him an instant success.

To create the capsule, Guess Originals worked with Fleischer Studios, Inc., the American animation studio that created Betty Boop. Writer Bob Martin also admits the musical bears some resemblance, coincidentally, to Barbie. Madonna flirted with the look a billion times, but she even had her own Boop-ish cartoon drawn for the opener of the her 1987 movie, “Who’s That Girl”.

Betty Boop In Red Hot Mamma Mug

And as the most unique human woman cartoon character of her day, she became a fan favorite. In the cartoon “Hot Dog,” released on March 29, 1930, in which Bimbo starred and in which Betty did not appear, Bimbo was shown out driving and trying to pick up women walking on the sidewalk. At the time, “hot dog” was slang for “attractive woman.” Appropriately enough, considering this quest of Bimbo’s, his name had two different meanings at the beginning of his cartoon career. When he was first dubbed “Bimbo,” that word meant a tough guy, or a criminal. Soon after Bimbo’s character began appearing on the screen, however, “bimbo” came to mean a promiscuous female. Whether or not this shift in meaning was partly prodded by Bimbo’s relentless on-screen pursuits, it underscored his interest in women.

The fashion brand has released a collection featuring the iconic cartoon character emblazoned across merchandise. While the period that Betty represented had been replaced by the “Big Bands” of the Swing Era, Fleischer Studios made an attempt to develop a replacement character in this style in the “Betty Boop” cartoon, “Sally Swing” (1938). While a concept with potential, the character was not well conceived and failed to project an energetic personality of the type later developed by Tex Avery at MGM, or the type emerging from Betty Hutton, a major Paramount star and symbol of the “Swing” and “Jitterbug” craze.

Due to a combination of policies affected by the Production Code and also changes in the content of Paramount’s films also affected Betty’s later appearances. While her later cartoons were more slick and consistently produced, they relied heavily on self-consciously cute and moralistic preaching, making Betty more of a “good citizen” maiden aunt spinster separated from any references to sexuality, and innocent girlishness. Oddly, Betty became a secondary character in her own cartoons, which began to center on the adventures of her pet dog, Pudgy, and the eccentric inventor, Grampy, who bore an interesting resemblance to Koko the Clown. Though the flapper age was over by the time Betty Boop took to the screen, she was beloved by Depression-era audiences. “The public embraced her because [she] reminded them of the carefree days of the 1920s,” says Pointer.

In the 1920s — and beyond — it was quite common for white performers to steal the acts of their Black counterparts without credit or compensation. But, whereas the Black performers of today can rally people to their cause using the power of social media, Black performers of yester-year — like Esther Jones — weren’t quite as lucky. “When Walton produced a sound film featuring Baby Esther practicing in her baby voice and “scatting” as proof, Kane, at the height of her career, was exposed as a fraud and lost the case. Headline-making scandals in 1920s Hollywood had led to intense public scrutiny of the industry, with a slew of states enacting film censorship laws. Moviemakers decided they needed a trade organization to help protect their interests; in 1927, the resulting Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) created a list of “Don’ts” and “Be-Carefuls” for films to adhere to in order to avoid further censorship. That list served as the framework for the 1930 Motion Picture Production Code (commonly known as the Hays Code after MPPDA president Will H. Hays), which outlined how to approach subjects like sex, dancing, drugs, vulgarity and crime.

In the years to follow, she would appear in clumsily colored re-releases (1970) on television, but her real revival came about during the late 60's and early 70's, when her cartoons began to appear in late night showings at college town theaters, as well as part of psychedelic light shows. Since then she has remained popular, with a fan following that becomes larger every day. The 90's celebration of her 60th anniversary brought her back into the public eye even more. To commemorate the event, A&E did a Biography special on her and on the Fleischers, and the American Movie Classics channel (AMC) has shown several of her cartoons. Her cartoons are now available to the general public in an 8 tape set from Republic Pictures. Years before Disney Studios released the retelling of the classic Snow White story, Betty Boop starred as the ebony-haired princess in 1933.

Even though she was given a more modest makeover after the passage of the Hays Code in 1934, she stayed popular until she was discontinued in 1939. The dog-turned-doll-like heroine has lived on through syndication and merchandising since television’s early days. Audiences would have recognized the send-up of Kane, now a Paramount star. But so did Kane herself—and when she experienced economic hardship due to a layoff, she took legal action against the animation studio. She sought $250,000 in damages and no further showings of Betty Boop cartoons—and claimed that phrases like “boop-boop-a-doop, boop-boopa doop, or boop-boopa-do, or boop-a-doop or similar combinations of such sounds or simply boop alone” were her own—part of what she called her “baby vamp” act.

And Jones’s performance inspired Kane to incorporate it into her own act — an act that would forever be immortalized in the Betty Boop cartoons. And, despite her relationship to the internationally-known character, Jones’s life — and death — remain shrouded in mystery. In fact, few recordings of her work remain, and what little is known about her came out in a lawsuit that exposed the real Betty Boop’s true origins once and for all.

Baby Esther herself was not available to testify, but Fleischer Studios provided a screen test—now lost—of Jones that convinced the judge Kane had copied the singer. Once in court, Bimbo escapes a penalty by producing a banjo out of nowhere, dancing a few steps, and singing portions of “St. Louis Blues.” The song, strictly speaking, is unrelated to the offense for which Bimbo’s been arrested, but he obviously hopes to gain the court’s sympathy by singing it as part of his defense. (The Fleischers apparently thought “St. Louis Blues” would be particularly appropriate to this cartoon because it deals with unrequited love.) The male judge and the all-male jury listen intently, and then dance to Bimbo’s performance. In the “Hot Dog” cartoon, Bimbo soon focuses on one female he thinks might be attractive.

The Musical, she’s stepping from her cartoon world into life as we live it today. Kane’s delivery—including her signature “boop-boop-a-doop”—was “a theatrical staple going back years,” says Pointer. Like the vaudeville performers that preceded her, Kane used her little-girl voice to deliver lyrics that would have been shocking in the mouth of another singer.

In the film, she was depicted with red hair as opposed to her typical black hair. The collection took inspiration from Betty Boop’s flapper look and the brand’s casual-wear aesthetic. Betty Boop appeared in two television specials, “The Romance of Betty Boop” (1984) and “The Betty Boop Movie Mystery” (1989), as well as cameo appearances in television commercials. And while television revivals were conceived, nothing materialized to the degree originally planned. Betty Boop made her first appearance on August 9, 1930 in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes, the sixth installment in Fleischer’s Talkartoon series.

A Man Fell From a Cruise Ship And Survived. The New York Times

how do people fall off cruise ships

The captain will notify other ships in the area, which are obligated to help, as well as the closest local maritime authority. "Man overboard" is the international maritime term for when a person of any gender has fallen off the ship and needs rescue. When a man overboard situation happens, cruise ship captains and staff go into emergency mode to try to save the passenger or crew member who is in danger. Aside from patrons falling overboard, other deaths take place aboard cruise ships, but they often don’t get as much attention.

What it's like to cross Antarctica's Weddell Sea

Whether falling off was an intentional decision or simply an alcohol-induced blunder, the results can be terrifying for everyone involved. As satisfying as the feeling of freedom may be, please, folks, don't urinate over the side of a cruise ship — especially after already having climbed over a four-and-a-half-foot-tall railing into a restricted area. Yet, this is exactly what an unidentified 23-year-old spring-breaker drunkenly did on a Carnival Cruise in 1996, which resulted in him slipping and falling 76 feet into the San Juan, Puerto Rico, harbor. In response, the Coast Guard and cruise launched a full-scale rescue with boats and helicopters, only to come up empty. This story has a happy ending though, as the man was found on a beach in San Juan more than 10 hours later. Banged up but generally OK, the partier had swum the four miles back to the coast in order to rescue himself.

What Happens if Someone Jumps Off of a Cruise Ship?

The Majestic Princess left on its maiden voyage from the Port of Los Angeles at about 60% capacity. The cruise lines plan to increase capacity over the next few months. Carnival Corp., the world’s largest cruise company, reported that bookings for the second half of 2022 already surpassed bookings for 2019.

Man overboard: Cruise ship overboards and how they happen

In their suit, the Skokan family argues that Royal Caribbean prematurely and inaccurately called their son’s MOB in December 2016 an intentional act, adding to their trauma and anguish. Paul Hoffman, the Skokan family’s lawyer, reached by Quartz, declined to comment on behalf of his clients due to the ongoing trial. Royal Caribbean also declined to comment on a case still before the court. In public announcements onboard the Independence of the Seas following Skokan’s MOB—as well as in a press release and media statements made immediately after—Royal Caribbean said that Skokan had jumped overboard intentionally. Several life ring buoys must be thrown to offer the person at risk a floating device, hoping the victim can reach one if he has not already been injured or pulled under the ship.

Tim Sears’ Terrifying Blackout

Apoorv Sahani later said in a post on X that his family was given footage from the cruise ship. "With the footage, we have unfortunately learnt that my mother has passed away," he wrote. The overboard woman was found to be in "good health" after the fall, the Coast Guard said.

Cruise ships also have on-board physicians and security officers to monitor people who might be at risk. According to a research study on the cause of cruise ship deaths published in the International Journal of Travel Medicine and Global Health, there were 623 reported deaths between 2000 and 2019. The first thing that would happen would be that the crew would track the exact location of the fall. It can take a cruise ship multiple miles to come to a stop or a position where it can turn around so being able to know where the passenger went overboard is incredibly important. If a guest goes overboard without anybody seeing them it may be hours or days before the missing passenger is reported. By this stage, the cruise line won’t be able to identify where they were at the time of the incident.

Modern cruise ships are designed so that it is almost impossible to fall off. Unless a person intentionally tries to jump or hang off railings in a dangerous way, their safety while onboard the ship is virtually guaranteed. A cruise vacation is an opportunity to see the world’s most stunning waterways in style and comfort. While navigating the open seas by cruise ship is an adventure unlike any other, there are unfortunate instances where passengers jump or fall off these massive ships into the treacherous waters below.

They also explained how they would conduct a detailed review of security camera video to ensure incidents like it would not occur in the future. In the early hours of June 15, 2009, a pilot boat rescued 46-year-old Larry Miller, who had been clinging to a water marker about one mile southeast of Mullet Key near Fort De Soto Park in Florida. The man had been there for almost three hours, having fallen after he climbed over a railing of the Carnival Inspiration (which failed to notice that he fell or was missing) to get a better view.

A passenger could be injured if they hit part of the ship as they fall. Should they survive the fall, water temperature also plays a significant role in how long a person can remain alive. You have a better chance of waiting out a rescue in the warm Caribbean sea than in chilly Alaskan waters.

This code will be broadcast throughout the ship and the announcement is usually made by the captain. I was on a cruise in 2009 where a man jumped from his balcony so I have experienced the steps mentioned in this article first hand. Violators could face criminal charges or get removed at the next port. Being aware of your surroundings is a meaningful life skill you should develop. This is especially important on a ship, where the consequences can be deadly.

Kay Longstaff was in the water for 10 hours before she was saved by a rescue team 60 miles off the shore of Croatia, where she was hospitalized for 24 hours. The former flight attendant did not suffer any physical injuries, and only suffered from stress. She told reporters in Pula she had fallen while sitting on the back deck, and was able to survive because she's physically fit from doing yoga and sang to stay alive. Had it not been during the dog days of summer, the 46-year-old would've likely perished within two hours in dramatically colder and choppier waters.

The 2020 research confirms that alcohol consumption plays an outsized role in passenger deaths on cruise ships. On the evening of March 6, 2018, a teen on the deck of the Norwegian Epic hopped atop the railing to snap a selfie. After losing her balance, she fell overboard into the ocean off the coast of the Bahamas. Multiple passersby heard the unidentified person crying out for help, and one passenger, Kareen Kennedy, ran back to her room to pray for the woman's safety. Although it was dark out and the waters were rough, she was saved by a search and rescue crew aboard the ship, which promptly docked at Port Canaveral in Florida so she could receive medical attention on shore. Even if crew members are immediately aware of the incident, it takes the average ship at least a mile to turn around.

Wash your hands regularly, use hand sanitizer, and avoid touching your face. If a cruise is in your future travel plans, you can do some things to maximize safety. Here are five of our best tips to help you and those in your crew stay safe.

Alcohol can play a role in overboard incidents, said Michael Winkleman, a maritime attorney with Lipcon, Margulies & Winkleman, P.A., who has represented travelers in overboard cases. "Usually, it's just people not making smart decisions because they're dramatically overserved and they end up going over," he said. "I'll stress that people don't just fall over the side," said Brian Salerno, senior vice president of global maritime policy at Cruise Lines International Association, the industry's leading trade group. "There are railings and they're pretty high. It's almost always the result of an intentional act." Incidents of foul play and the possibility of a purposeful push can contribute to overboard incidents, as well.

What to Expect: Man Overboard on a Cruise Ship

how do people fall off cruise ships

A month later, Norwegian and the Port of New Orleans recognized Giffel's actions with a ceremony aboard the Spirit. As a thank you, Capt. Evans Hoyt presented the teen with two plaques and the life ring he used to save his fellow passenger. One thing cruise ships have in place is closed-circuit television monitors (or CCTV), which record activity around the ships. CCTV footage is generally used to compile important information about the individual in question, including where exactly the man overboard took place. What happens in the aftermath of a man overboard situation is the cruise ship’s and crew’s responsibility. But as passengers, there are things we can do to avoid putting ourselves in this dangerous situation.

I've Heard of Carnival Cruise Man Overboard Emergencies. Should I Cancel My Cruise?

If you are out on deck or have a balcony cabin on the side of the ship where the emergency responders are searching, you will likely see lights sweeping the area. Overboards are particularly grim when the ship is moving, as the vessel's speed and current mean that a person can be swept away quickly. If they aren't immediately seen, it can be a while before the captain realizes what has happened. If you’re unlucky enough to witness someone else falling overboard, you must alert a crew member as soon as possible. It doesn’t matter which crew member you inform, from the bartender to the maid, just shout and raise the alarm as soon as you can.

Cruise News Recap: Carnival Tampering, Dining Changes, Evacuation

When it's determined that someone has gone over the side, the bridge — the ship's control center — will contact the coast guard, and a search will begin. Some of these factors include whether the individual was hurt by a collision with the sea or a section of the boat on the way down, and also how fast the passenger can be saved by a crew member, coastguard, or passing ship. Just after immediate responses are completed, the entire focus changes to recalling the vessel to the place of the fall and commencing the rescue attempt.

Travel

If someone goes overboard in the middle of the night and it’s not noticed until the next day, the ship could be as far as 100 miles away by the time it’s reported. Generally speaking, going overboard is almost impossible unless you are doing something you probably shouldn’t. Sadly, it’s much easier to jump off a cruise ship, which is entirely different (although it still qualifies as a “man overboard” incident.). The crew member went overboard off the German cruise ship, called the AIDAperla, on October 22 as the vessel was traveling from Hamburg to Spain. But at least 10 people fell off major cruise line ships so far this year, turning fun-in-the-sun vacations into disaster situations — and only two survived the fall into the ocean.

Cruise Ships Stop if You Fall Overboard – Here’s What Happens

Your chances of falling overboard on a cruise are roughly 1 in 1.4 million. Cruise lines often investigate the incidents to determine if they should press charges. The passenger may also face serious consequences from various legal bodies, as intentionally jumping from a ship is considered a major offense under maritime law.

how do people fall off cruise ships

Going overboard from a boat is regarded as a life-threatening condition, and the phrase “man overboard” is frequently used to describe someone who requires rescue. Instances of cruise ship passengers falling overboard are exceptionally rare, according to statistics. On July 23, 2023, a search was conducted after 30-year-old Jaylen Hill was reported to have jumped off a Carnival Cruise Line vessel. During the four-day trip from Florida to the Bahamas, the man’s travel companion alerted crew members that his friend was missing. After exhaustive efforts, US Coast Guard officials called off the search. Cruise lines must adhere to strict safety standards that ensure passengers cannot accidentally fall overboard.

Don’t Waste Your Time In Everglades National Park

These stats are low, considering the number of passengers on cruise ships has increased—today, more than 20 million people take cruises each year. All things considered, a fear of going overboard shouldn’t be an excuse to not take a cruise. Given all of the safety precautions in place, it’s hard to imagine that someone could fall overboard while on a giant cruise ship.

Other Ships Will Join in The Search

More than 100 volunteers searched the vessel to no avail — everyone assumed she was dead. Two days later, the 32-year-old was spotted floating in the East China Sea off the coast of Zhoushan. The woman, identified only as Fan, fell overboard after peering over the edge to look at the water.

US congresswoman Doris Matsui from California was an original co-sponsor of the CVSSA, and in 2017 proposed bipartisan legislation to further strengthen that bill, known as the Cruise Passenger Protection Act. Among other measures, the act would amend the clause pertaining to man-overboard technology to say that cruise lines must implement complete MOB-detection tech, not just image-capture. It would also entitle a deceased individual’s family to claim full compensation, similar to aviation accidents. Unlike in a plane crash, families like Broberg’s are limited in the amount of damages they can claim in a wrongful death suit when the death occurred on the high seas, insulating the cruise lines from any major financial fallout resulting from MOBs. The International Maritime Organization (IMO)—a specialized agency of the UN—develops the standards and regulations that are expected of flag states who have signed onto UNCLOS, as well as other maritime safety treaties. CLIA frequently notes, as it did to Quartz, that it experiences “robust enforcement” from the IMO.

It bears repeating that not many people each year fall overboard on cruise ships. In each of these cases, the person’s absence was only discovered several hours after they disappeared. Coast Guard called off a search after a 30-year-old man was reported missing on Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Elation cruise ship and cruise officials said surveillance video showed him jumping off. Three weeks previous, a 42-year-old woman fell off the 10th deck of the Royal Caribbean International but was rescued by the ship's crew. In May a 35-year-old Carnival Magic passenger went overboard east of Jacksonville and was never found.

A seemingly happy and perfectly typical-looking passenger could suddenly jump without warning. This is why all major cruise lines take prevention efforts and response actions so seriously. Rough seas and distance from shore also play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the incident.

When it was clear the young man wasn't thinking straight, the captain grabbed him, but the passenger pulled away, ran out the door, and left over the railing. Lifeboats from the Britanis and a nearby Norwegian ship eventually found the missing man thanks to a calm sea, clear skies, a full moon, and some skillful searching. It turns out the man had consumed both drugs and alcohol and wrongfully believed the ship was in the midst of a mutiny. "The ship and crew immediately reported the incident to local authorities and began searching for the guest. Thankfully, the guest was successfully recovered and was brought on board," the cruise line told Business Insider.

This often results in individuals almost instantly breaking their necks. Spas and gyms remain open, but some cruise lines limit them to vaccinated guests. Most self-serve buffets have been modified so that employees serve passengers to avoid unnecessary crowding. Indoor dancing, karaoke and nightclubs are no longer allowed on many ships, including the Majestic Princess, which converted its karaoke area into extra room for spa treatments. On some ships, passengers won’t be allowed to try on clothing for sale. Most ships are sailing at less than full capacity, partly to encourage physical distancing.

While it is only a drill, it’s still something you should take seriously. These drills are relatively quick, but the information they provide could save your life. Unfortunately, these incidents often occur when someone tries to capture a picture or document the risk they’re taking. These can suck you under and make keeping your head above water nearly impossible. To go onshore, you must meet the health protocols of the country the ship visits. The government of the Bahamas, for example, recently announced that all cruise visitors must be fully vaccinated, with the exception of travelers under age 12 and those with medical exemptions.

It’s standard practice for cruise ship employees to sign contracts that commit them to three, six, or nine months of working seven days a week. Employment contracts that force arbitration in the event of any injury, mishap, or wrongful death—thereby limiting the compensation they are entitled to—are also commonly used. According to Carver, when police finally traced Merrian Carver’s whereabouts to the ship via a credit-card receipt, it took Royal Caribbean three days to confirm she had even been on the ship.

It’s important to note that passenger vessels must follow strict security and safety requirements. One requirement is that railings be at least 42 inches above the deck. Despite their height, accidental overboard accidents still occur more often than they should. Before we cover some tips that could help a person survive if they fell overboard, it’s important to clarify that these incidents are extremely rare.
